His inspired leadership generated the confidence in the orchestra that was necessary to make possible the erection of one of the great concert halls of the world. Under his baton the orchestra's acclaimed recordings and international tours have brought the organization prestige throughout the musical world. His loving commitment to the music of his Latin American heritage has introduced countless audiences to the richness and vitality of this often neglected musical literature, and his dedication to the music of his time has provided support and encouragement to aspiring and established composers in this city and throughout the world. In recognition of the impact of his artistic personality on the performing arts, Southern Methodist University proudly confers upon Eduardo Mata the degree of Doctor of Music, honoris causa.
